Practical Courses

Practical Courses

During a practical course, the H.E.R.P. uses a series of carefully chosen, cold-blooded animals to teach your students everything there is to know on how to properly work with these animals.

We bring along various species of   lizards, snakes, tortoises, turtles, amphibians and arthropods.

Students are given the opportunity to view and handle all animals up close and are allowed to develop habituation in dealing with these animals. Suitable transportation options and handling protocols are discussed and gender determination can be practiced if desired.

As a customer you can choose from different modules, which allows a more experienced audience to learn more specialised techniques.

The handling practicals are always given by and under the guidance of experienced specialists.

The general subjects:

- Habituation to the handling of cold-blooded animals

- Handling of cold-blooded animals in practice

- Handling techniques and protocols

- General sex determination

- Stress reduction during handling

- Appropriate capture and transport techniques

There are three modules available:

Basic Practical Course:

During the basic practical, students are given the opportunity to handle animals that are easy to manipulate and are able to apply and excercice different handling techniques.

The animals that are treated during the basic course are the most common species in captivity and are the most likely to be encountered in the field.

All animals that are used during the basic practicum are well socialized, harmless animals.

During the basic practical the following animal groups are treated:

- Small to medium sized lizards

- Small to medium sized snakes

- Smaller turtle and tortoise species

- Amphibians (frogs & salamanders)

Advanced Practical Course:

The advanced practical offers the more experienced student a proper  challenge.

For example, different handling techniques, transport options and hazard analysis are applied to larger, unusual or 'more dangerous' animals.

The student is given the opportunity to work in a team in dealing with cold-blooded animals, gets acquainted with handling material, learns how to handle larger and more defensive animals and has the possibility to handle more unique animals.

Prior knowledge or experience is NOT required to take part in the advanced practical, but is recommended. Of course, despite their size and / or character, the animals are completely harmless and  specialized supervisors are present at all times.

During the advanced practical the following animal groups are used:

- Larger lizards

- Giant snakes

- Defensive snakes

- Crocodilians (on request)

- Giant tortoises and turtles (on request)

- Arthropods

Combination Course:

The combination practicum allows the students to go through each module in succession. In this way all students get the chance to experience both practicals in groups and get acquainted with a wide range of animals. The duration of both modules can be adjusted to the available time and the size of the groups.

- Combination: Lecture + Practical

A general guest lecture is often combined with an extensive handling practical. During the guest lecture the handling practical is prepared and theoretically introduced to the students.

- Powerpoint presentation

The powerpoint presentations, which are used during the course of the lecture, can be delivered to the teachers in advance or during the lesson.

This is done in advance by mail and can then be passed on tp the audience.
