Science Based Husbandry
Books and care sheets can be a good first source of information on keeping certain animal species. However, care sheets are often written based on personal opinions or collections of experiences from other hobbyists. As a result, some care sheets may be contradictory and, in some cases, incorrect!
“Science-based husbandry” is a practical approach to animal care that is based on scientific evidence, observations from the wild, and data about the species’ natural habitat. It is a form of self-study that goes beyond simply relying on care sheets. This scientific data is compiled into a “Natural History Profile,” which focuses on the who, what, when, where, and why of a species. Today, this information is easily accessible through the internet and various applications! Understanding which information is relevant, where to find it, and how to organize the collected data can be overwhelming. However, the search is a challenge that will enrich you with skills and insights that you can later apply to any species you wish to keep.
This “Natural History Profile” is then translated into concrete guidelines regarding terrarium design, temperature and humidity control, lighting, nutrition, health management, and the opportunity to exhibit natural behaviors. A case study is used to explain everything in a practical way.
This training provides you with the tools to get started immediately. It is suitable for both beginner terrarium keepers who need a push in the right direction and experienced hobbyists looking to gain new insights and tools in the ever-evolving field of herpetoculture.
